An Experiment in Learning Analytics

Learning Analytics is the use of Data Analytic practices to aid in the understanding of learning effectiveness.  Learning Analytics benefit students, instructors and advisors.  Some of the challenges facing learning analytics efforts include: limits to data captured and non-traditional nature of some student data.  In this Learning Analytics experiment, we combine three semesters of iClicker, Blackboard, Faculty Center, AppStream usage logs and student survey data, from INFO4940 Business Intelligence Systems class, in an attempt to answer questions such as:

  • Is there a correlation between lecture attendance / participation and related quiz scores?
  • Is there a correlation between student program / year and success with quizzes, individual assignment, team project?
  • Is there a correlation between hours using class lab and success with individual assignments and team project?
  • Which skills and reported level self reported by students, correlate to individual success?
  • Should some skills be a pre-requisite for info4940?

This paper covers the methodology and technologies involved, along with findings and lessons learned.
